Description | Intensive study of and practice in writing processes, from invention and researching to drafting, revising, and editing, both individually and collaboratively. Emphasis on effective rhetorical choices, including audience, purpose, arrangement, and style. Focus on writing the academic essay as a vehicle for learning, communicating, and critical analysis. | ||||||||||

Learning Outcomes |
Upon successful completion of this course, students will: Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative writing processes. Develop ideas with appropriate support and attribution. Write in a style appropriate to audience and purpose. Read, reflect, and respond critically to a variety of texts. Use Edited American English in academic essays. |

Lecture Topics Outline |

Students must complete 5 Academic Essays: Narrative, Descriptive, Process Analysis, Compare/Contrast, and Persuasion/Argumentation. |

I will be grading your essays using a ten category 1301 Essay Grading Rubric, which I will provide for you at the beginning of the semester. I will be posting your grades on Blackboard for you to access at any point throughout the semester. If you would like to meet with me about your grade, then you will need to schedule an appointment with me. All of the writing in this class must be written by the student enrolled in the class without any outside help. ***Plagiarism policy will be discussed in in further detail; first offense will result in a 0 for the assignment, and the second offense will result in failing the class.*** Ignorance is not a defense. The Plagiarism Contract will be read in class and signed by each student who verifies he/she understands exactly what plagiarism is and the consequences if it is committed. Plagiarism is a serious offense and will be dealt with as such. ***Communication is key! I receive emails directly to my phone, and I am quick to respond. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns at any point in the semester, please feel free to reach out to me. There is no need for you to go through the semester with any unanswered questions or unaddressed issues. I am here to assist you in any way that I can, and I want everyone to get the most out of their online experience this semester! |

Attendance Policy | Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success.
